Simply blonde bliss.
Nice 'n Easy Born Blonde delivers natural-looking, uniform lightening for an all-over blonde look in one simple step. Whether your starting color is light blonde to dark brown or even black, you can easily become completely, beautifully blonde.

Expert color advice.
Find blonding information to help you get and keep the lighter look you want.

What to expect.
  • A strand test will indicate your optimal blonding time
  • Darker starting colors will go through more stages of lightening
  • You may see red, orange or gold tones during the lightening process—leave the mixture on longer to remove these.
First time blonding?
Then you should apply the lightening mixture to your roots last. Heat from your scalp will accelerate the lightening process, so your roots will need less time to become as light as your tips.

Keep it conditioned.
To lock in color and shine, apply ColorSeal Weekly Conditioning Gloss once a week after shampooing.

How To Use

GET READY TO LIGHTEN

  • Use an old towel to protect your clothing and household surfaces.
  • Have a clock handy for timing.
  • Wear the gloves provided when you prepare and apply the lightening mixture.

HOW TO PREPARE HIGHLIGHTING MIXTURE

  • Holding away from face, shake the Lightening Powder (1) packette before opening to make sure contents settle to the bottom.
  • Wearing the gloves provided, remove the cap from the Developing Creme (2) bottle and pour the contents of the Lightening Powder (1) packette into the bottle. (Note: if using Born Blonde Maxi, be sure to use both Lightening Powder (1) packettes.)
  • Put on the special applicator tip and place a gloved finger over the opening. Shake well until powder dissolves.
  • Reopen and pour the Liquid Lightener (3) into the Developing Creme (2) bottle. Replace the tip.
  • Place a gloved finger over the applicator tip opening. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
  • Apply the lightening mixture to your hair immediately.
Never reseal bottle or store color mixture in a closed container. Once mixed, a sealed container of haircolor could burst.

HOW TO APPLY LIGHTENING MIXTURE

For first time lightener users

STEP 1 APPLY LIGHTENING MIXTURE

  • Part dry hair into four sections and use plastic clips to secure in place.
  • Start at the darkest part of your head (usually at the back). Make narrow 1/4 inch parts and squeeze applicator bottle to apply Born Blonde to each hair strand, keeping lightening mixture 1 inch away from scalp. Use your gloved fingers to work the lightening mixture through to hair ends, but do not apply to root area at this stage.
  • Continue until the hair strands of all four sections are evenly covered with lightening mixture. You should save 1/3 of the lightening mixture to complete the application at the root area.
  • If any lightening mixture gets on your skin or household surface, wipe it off immediately with a damp paper towel.

STEP 2 TIME

  • Leave the lightening mixture on your hair for half the length of time indicated by your Strand Test or 20 minutes.
  • Check the progress of your blonding from the first section of hair applied with the lightening mixture. Wipe a strand with a damp paper towel and check the shade. Your hair should have no red tones and should have lightened to the orange stage similar to the color of a pumpkin. If the hair strand is not light enough, reapply the lightening mixture to the same strand and continue checking every 5 minutes.
  • Once the strand from the first section has reached the orange stage of lightening, YOU CAN NOW APPLY THE LIGHTENING MIXTURE TO THE ROOT AREA. Begin at the darkest part of your hair as before. Make 1/4 inch parts and apply the lightening mixture to the 1 inch root area that you left uncovered. Continue until the root area of all four sections is evenly covered with lightening mixture.
  • Gently work the remaining lightening mixture through all of your hair, but do not rub into scalp. Loosely pile hair on top of head and resume timing.
  • Leave the lightening mixture on for the remaining time indicated by your Strand Test. Maximum total time should not exceed 90 minutes.
  • Check the progress of your blonding from the first section of hair applied with the lightening mixture. Wipe a strand with a damp paper towel. Check evenness of lightening, from root to tip. If your root area does not match hair ends, reapply the lightening mixture to the same strand and continue checking every 5 minutes until you achieve overall even lightening.

STEP 3 RINSE, SHAMPOO & CONDITION

  • Thoroughly rinse the lightening mixture from your hair until the water runs clear.
  • Shampoo hair with a mild shampoo.
  • Apply the Moisture Intensive Conditioner evenly to hair. For best results leave on for 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Rinse and style your hair as usual. Discard any unused lightening mixture. If toning hair, please refer to the Haircolor Selection Guide* and apply toner according to its accompanying instructions.
  • To keep hair shiny week after week, use the Moisture Intensive Conditioner once a week after shampooing.

ROOT APPLICATION

For hair lightener users who lighten every 1-2 months
For hair lightener users with hair ends that are too light

STEP 1 APPLY LIGHTENING MIXTURE

  • Part dry hair into four sections and use plastic clips to secure in place.
  • Start at the darkest part of your head (usually at the back). Make narrow 1/4 inch parts and squeeze applicator bottle to apply lightening mixture only to the new growth at the roots. Do not overlap lightening mixture onto previously lightened hair. Continue until the new growth at the roots of all four sections is evenly covered with lightening mixture.
  • If any lightening mixture gets on your skin or household surface, wipe it off immediately with a damp paper towel.

STEP 2 TIME

  • Leave the lightening mixture on your hair for half the length of time indicated by your Strand Test or 10 minutes. Body heat from the scalp accelerates the lightening action making new growth lighten in less time.
  • Check the progress of your blonding from the first section of hair applied with the lightening mixture. Wipe a strand with a damp paper towel. If your new growth at the roots has not reached the level of lightness that matches your previously lightened hair ends, reapply the lightening mixture to the same strand at the root area and continue checking every 5 minutes until you reach the lightness desired. If you have not reached the lightness desired after 90 minutes, refer to Strand Test** for further instructions. If you have any questions, call the Expert Color Consultants for advice. Do not exceed maximum time of 90 minutes.

Useful Tips from Born Blonde
  • If you have purchased Born Blonde Maxi lightener kit, your kit will contain 2 Supreme Lightening Activator Powder packettes. Born Blonde Original & Born Blonde Ultra Blue will contain one packette.
  • If this is your first tie apply a hair lightener, and your hair is longer than shoulder length or very thick, you may need two boxes of your chosen lightener.
  • Apply Born Blonde lightener to dry hair that is free of styling product build-up, shampoo at least one day before applying any Born Blonde lightener. However DO NOT shampoo immediately before applying Born Blonde lightener, as this will wash away the natural oils that help protect your scalp during the lightening process.
Expert Lightening Advice
  • When lightening for the first time, be sure to apply the lightener mixture to the root area last to ensure even blonding results. Body heat from the scalp accelerates the lightening action making hair nearest the scalp lighten faster than hair ends.
  • During lightening, hair goes through some or all of the following stages of lightening: 1) Black 2) Brown 3) Red 4) Orange 5) Gold 6) Yellow 7) Pale Yellow
  • The darker your current hair color, the more stages your hair must be lightened through to achieve a blonde result. Don't be surprised if you see red, orange, or gold tones in your hair after you have applied Born Blonde. Leaving the lightener mixture on longer will remove them and allow you to reach your desired level of lightness.
  • If using any of these Born Blonde lighteners to pre-lighten hair before adding our recommended toner, lighten hair to yellow without a trace of red, orange, or gold tones. This yellow color is similar to the color of a banana skin. Lighten hair to pale yellow, similar to the color of the inside of a banana, if adding a very light blonde toner. Please see Hair color selection Guide inside.
  • Reapply Born Blonde lightener every 4 to 6 weeks using the Touch-Up Application method. Be sure to reapply only to the new growth at the roots. Do not overlap lightener mixture onto previously lightened hair; this could weaken hair and cause breakage.
Clairol Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT PRODUCTS DOES CLAIROL MAKE?
Clairol makes haircolor products. Choose from Semi-Permanent (lasts through 8-12 shampoos), Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos), Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) or Highlighting & Blonding to help you become colorwonderful™.
SHOULD INDIVIDUALS WITH NATURAL, UNCOLORED HAIR USE DIFFERENT HAIRCOLOR PRODUCTS THAN THOSE WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY COLORED THEIR HAIR?
It depends on the desired result. If you are coloring your hair for the first time and only want to enhance your natural color, try a Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos) product close to your natural haircolor. If you want to go lighter, you need to select a Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) haircolor, then refer to the insert that comes inside your box of Clairol haircolor and follow the instructions for first time application.
SHOULD PEOPLE WHO WANT TO COVER GRAY HAIR USE DIFFERENT COLORING PRODUCTS THAN THOSE WHO DON'T NEED COVERAGE?
Most Clairol haircolor products will blend or cover gray hair to some degree. If you have a small percentage of gray (not very visible), use a Semi-Permanent (lasts through 8-12 shampoos) product, such as Loving Care. If you have a higher percentage of gray hair (up to 50%), use a Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos) product such as Natural Instincts, which will blend away gray hair.
On the other hand, if you have a lot of gray and want to cover it completely, use a Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) product. If you have 50% or more gray, use Nice 'n Easy Gray Solution.
HOW CAN I TEST-RUN A COLOR BEFORE COMMITTING TO COLORING MY ENTIRE HEAD OF HAIR?
Strand test is a simple method for you to test haircolor on a portion of your hair before doing the entire application. (The instructions are in your haircolor box.) It's an important step because it's the only way to see exactly how the shade you selected works with your starting haircolor to achieve the resulting color. A strand test will also help you determine the exact timing you'll need to color your whole head.
WHERE CAN I FIND PRODUCT INSTRUCTIONS?
Product instruction inserts are inside your haircolor box.
Additional Instructions

BEFORE YOU LIGHTEN

  • Read this entire instruction leaflet before you begin.
  • Do the STRAND TEST to determine your optimum lightening time.
  • Do not shampoo immediately before lightening – your scalp has natural oils that help protect it. If hair has excess styling product build-up, shampoo the day before.
  • Do not use Born Blonde if your hair is treated with henna or color restorers, permed, or relaxed. Call the Expert Color Consultants for advice.

STRAND TEST

Do the STRAND TEST each time you lighten to determine optimal timing and results and to confirm that your hair is in the right condition to use Born Blonde. Sun, chlorine and previous haircoloring can affect your timing and results. You will need: scissors, tape, plastic bowl, plastic spoon and a clock.
  • Cut a 1/4 inch wide strand from the darkest part of your dry hair close to the scalp and tape at the cut end.
  • Put on gloves provided. Prepare the test mixture. Holding away from face, shake the Lightening Powder (1) packette before opening to make sure contents settle to the bottom. Mix 1/4 teaspoon for Ultra Blue or Original Formula or 1/2 teaspoon for Maxi Blonde Formula, of the Lightening Powder (1) with 2 teaspoons of Developing Creme (2) in a plastic bowl. Reseal Lightening Powder (1) tightly to avoid spilling. Then add 1 teaspoon of the Liquid Lightener (3) and mix well.
  • Completely cover the hair strand with the lightening mixture and start timing. Refer to the Born Blonde Shade Results Chart on the back of the box for your expected lightening result. Depending on how light you want your hair to be, you should leave the lightening mixture on a minimum of 20 minutes, up to a maximum of 90 minutes.
  • After 20 minutes, wipe the strand clean. If the strand is not light enough, return it to the lightening mixture and check every 5 minutes. Remember your hair looks darker when wet.
  • Rinse the strand thoroughly and towel dry gently. If the strand shows any breakage or gumminess, do not proceed with the overall application. Your hair is not in good condition and may need a trim or deep conditioning. Call the Clairol Expert Color Consultants for advice.
  • **IF THE STRAND DID NOT LIGHTEN SUFFICIENTLY AFTER 90 MINUTES, you will need to do two separate applications. Be sure to repeat the Strand Test using the lightened hair strand from the first Strand Test to determine repeat application timing and lightening results and to confirm that your hair is in the right condition to reapply Born Blonde. Remember, when reapplying lightener, allow 24 hours to elapse between each application. If your scalp is sensitive, wait another 24 hours before reapplying. Repeat application timing should not exceed 45 minutes.
  • Rinse and save gloves.

How To Use:

  1. STEP 1: Easy Preparation

DO SKIN ALLERGY TEST 48 HOURS BEFORE EACH APPLICATION EVEN IF YOU HAVE ALREADY USED COLORING PRODUCTS

    1. A. Wet and towel dry hair until damp. Remember, don't shampoo your hair before you color.
    2. B. Put on the Professional Colorist Gloves provided.
    3. C. Pull up the tab to remove the tip of the Gentle Activating Crème bottle-2 and discard the tab. Unscrew the cap from the Gentle Activating Crème-2.
    4. D. Open the Color-Enhancing Colorant-1 and pour the entire contents into the Gentle Activating Crème-2.
    5. E. With finger over the open tip, point away from face, and shake well until the color is totally blended and the mixture thickens.
    6. F. Apply the color to your damp hair immediately.

ONCE MIXED, NEVER RESEAL OR STORE THE COLOR IN A CLOSED CONTAINER AS IT COULD BURST.

  2. STEP 2: Easy Application
    OPTION A: ALL OVER COLOR
For first time haircolor users and those who have not colored for 3 months.
    1. 1. Apply Color
      • Part your hair into small, even sections using the applicator nozzle. Apply color first to your damp roots and then immediately through the length of your damp hair. Do not rub into scalp.
    2. 2. Time It
      • Now that you have applied the color to your hair, leave it on hair for 10 minutes or the time indicated by your Strand Test.

    Tips from the experts:
    • When covering gray, start where you have the most gray.
    • Don't worry if the color of the mixture on your hair looks different from your desired color.
    • If any color gets onto your skin or household surface, wipe it off immediately with a damp towel.
    • For resistant gray hair, you can leave color on for an additional 10 minutes. Total time should not exceed 20 minutes.
    • For permed or relaxed hair, leave color on for only 8 minutes total.

    OPTION B: ROOT APPLICATION
For users who color every 4-6 weeks.
    1. 1. Apply Color
      • On damp hair apply mixture only to the new hair growth at the roots instead of applying color to your entire head.
      • Save the remainder of the color to use for the rest of your damp hair.
    2. 2. Time It
      • Now that you have applied the mixture to your new hair growth, leave on hair for 5 minutes.
      • Then gently work the remaining color through the rest of your hair (avoid rubbing into the scalp) and leave it on hair for an additional 5 minutes.

    Tips from the experts:
    • For resistant gray hair, you may need to leave color on the root area for an additional 5-10 minutes before working color down for the last 5 minutes. Total time should not exceed 20 minutes.
    • For permed or relaxed hair, leave color on for only 8 minutes total.
  3. STEP 3: Rinse and Condition
    1. 1. Rinse
      • Wearing gloves, add a small amount of warm water to your hair and work into a lather by gently massaging. Rinse hair thoroughly until water runs clear. For best results, wait 24 hours before shampooing.
    2. 2. Condition
      • Next, apply a small amount (about the size of a nickel) of the Once A Week Color Treat™ Color Conditioning Treatment-3 evenly to your hair. For best results leave on for 2 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Save the remainder for up to 5 more weekly conditioning treatments (See Tip below).

    Tip from the experts:
    • Once a week substitute your regular conditioner for our Once A Week Color Treat™ Color Conditioning Treatment to help maintain your healthy, natural-looking color.

Useful Tips From the Experts at Clairol:

  • Apply color to damp hair that is free of styling product build-up. If hair has build-up, shampoo one day prior to coloring.
  • Do not shampoo immediately before coloring. Your scalp has natural oils that help protect it during coloring.
  • To prevent staining, apply a little moisturizer around your hairline.
  • For added shine, use Natural Instincts Shine Happy 3-4 weeks after coloring.
  • For best results, do not shampoo your hair for 24 hours after coloring.
  • If you want to lighten your hair color, or if your hair is more than 50% gray, consider using a permanent haircolor like Hydrience or Nice 'n Easy.
  • If you plan to perm your hair, perm first, and then you can use Natural Instincts the very same day as long as your scalp is not irritated _and is in good condition.
  • If you plan to chemically relax your hair, relax your hair first, and then wait at least 7 days and one shampoo before coloring.
  • If you've used a gradual color restorer, henna or metallic dyes, don't use Natural Instincts until your hair has grown out and the colored _areas have been cut off.

Frequently Asked Questions: About Clairol products:

  • What products does Clairol make?
Clairol makes haircolor products. Choose from Semi-Permanent (lasts through 8-12 shampoos), Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos), Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) or Highlighting & Blonding to help you become colorwonderful™.
  • Should individuals with natural, uncolored hair use different haircolor products than those who have previously colored their hair?
It depends on the desired result. If you are coloring your hair for the first time and only want to enhance your natural color, try a Demi-Permanent (lasts through 28 shampoos) product close to your natural haircolor. If you want to go lighter, you need to select a Permanent (lasts until your hair grows out or you recolor) haircolor, then refer to the insert that comes inside your box of Clairol haircolor and follow the instructions for first time application.
  • Should people who want to cover gray hair use different coloring products than those who don't need coverage?
  • How can I test-run a color before committing to coloring my entire head of hair?
Strand test is a simple method for you to test haircolor on a portion of your hair before doing the entire application. (The instructions are in your haircolor box.) It's an important step because it's the only way to see exactly how the shade you selected works with your starting haircolor to achieve the resulting color. A strand test will also help you determine the exact timing you'll need to color your whole head.
  • Where can I find product instructions?
Product instruction inserts are inside your haircolor box.
